Travel to Naples

"Get your hands off that cheese!" Dad smacking his son's hands away from the charcuterie board of cheese and meats, insisting he use a fork (thank god).

Today we’re leaving Positano and are headed to Naples, partly because we wanted to see Pompeii and partly because we need to fly out of an airport that is relatively large. We were able to get our last breakfast at the amazing hotel (which sounds like we are on death row), and then Dave took some time to draw while the girls did some last minute shopping (which consisted of new bowls, which Dave was “excited” about, and candy). We then eventually caught the 12:30pm ferry over to Naples which arrived right on time. A little over an hour later we docked and caught a taxi to our AirBnB. It was super hot out here in Naples (like 91) and we melted a bit outside waiting for our host, but she eventually showed up and we went through the gremlin door set inside a massive door to get to our place (see below). The apartment was pretty nice, but extremely warm; the host said the AC would turn on…eventually. It did, but throughout our stay, it never got cooler than 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 degrees Fahrenheit). It was…hot.

IMG 1070After sitting around the apartment for a bit, we went grocery shopping for some last minute Italian ingredients like pasta and olive oil. We had a food tour scheduled for 5:30pm so headed to meet the group soon after that. We met our food tour guide Rebecca from Secret Food Tours, who was very nice. We started the tour off with the “secret” stop which was some fried pasta balls which were delicious! Tsana had a potato croquette thing since the fried pasta had meat. Our next stop were some spritzes, Anna and Dave had a Campari spritz (think bitter and bubbly, per Anna’s description) and Tsana had a lemon soda. After the spritz, the group shared 2 anti-pasta plates, which grossed Anna out since we were sharing with strangers, and there were two young kids - not optimal for them to partake since they put they had to touch all the food (ew).

IMG 5443Next was the pizza stop, we walked into this tiny looking restaurant that looked only to be a street-facing booth, but there was a whole upstairs you couldn’t see from the street. We headed upstairs, where we finally got a table to sit down, which was very much appreciated (we had been walking/standing and eating up until now). It was still pretty hot outside and we needed the break, so the AC in the restaurant was also a welcome change. We had 2 types of pizzas: a traditional margherita with mozzarella, sauce and basil, and an even more traditional marinara pizza that was just sauce. They both were amazing!

After pizza, we had to, of course, have some pasta, why not? We had some Sunday Sauce which is traditionally served on Sunday, not Thursday (but they made an exception for us), and is cooked all day, it was pretty good, but not pizza good. Our final stop was some espresso at 8:30pm, which is good because we didn’t want to sleep anyway, and some sfogiatella folla (spiced ricotta filling with a shortcrust pastry dough) and napoletano (rum soaked pastry).

IMG 1075We were obviously stuffed, so off we went to bed. The espresso didn’t matter - the sun and travel had taken it out of us and we crashed for the night!
